ABOUT THE COMMITTEE
The Indian National Press Meet (INPM) at SSMUN 2026 offers a unique platform blending journalism with policy debate. This year, delegates will deliberate on the primary agenda: Deliberation on the Role of Indian News Agencies in Shaping Public Perception Through the Coverage of Elections During the 2024 General Elections.
The committee will examine how wire services gather, frame, and distribute political information. A key focus is the systemic impact of "churnalism": where media outlets publish syndicated wire feeds verbatim and how centralized headline choices, quote selection, and video clips influence national political narratives.
Discussion will cover critical challenges within India’s media ecosystem, including newsroom neutrality, political sourcing, corporate ownership, and the surge of AI-generated deepfakes during campaigns.
Delegates will navigate the tension between stricter oversight, verification protocols, and party-coverage charters versus maintaining editorially autonomous newsrooms free from state interference. The goal is to develop actionable frameworks, ethical codes, and regulatory models that combat digital voter manipulation, enhance media credibility, and uphold democratic freedoms and public accountability.
